Objectives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The main objective of the Barunga Learning and Aboriginal Knowledge Centre (BLAKC) is to create new ways for First Nations people from the Northern Territory communities of Barunga, Beswick, Manyallaluk and Werenbun to earn an income while living in our communities. This will be achieved through four pillars: Education, Employment, Enterprise and Equity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We seek to increase opportunities for young people to work in their community or on Country and stay safe with their families. We aim to teach Aboriginal knowledge and culture and draw on Western education to increase the opportunities open for young people. We want to give young people the chance to experience life in other places and to share their own cultural knowledge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We believe in two-way learning: Aboriginal people sharing cultural knowledge and ways of caring for Country, while also engaging with Western education, science and systems. Through this, we will weave together Aboriginal and Western science, research, education and practice to address the major challenges facing our communities today, including Aboriginal health and wellbeing, climate change, food security and the preservation and protection of cultural heritage and places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aims<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Barunga Learning and Aboriginal Knolwedge Centre’s aims under each of the four pillars are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Education<\/strong>
We will teach Aboriginal knowledge, culture, values and history to other people so they can have a better understanding of who we are. We will draw on Western education to give our children more opportunities and a better understanding of the world beyond our communities. We will support our young people to keep practising and passing on our culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Employment<\/strong>
We will create new community-based employment opportunities for young people, Elders and other community members so they do not have to go to big towns or cities like Katherine or Darwin to get work. We will establish research partnerships and weave together Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal knowledges to create better social and economic outcomes for our members and for the wider society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2060Enterprise<\/strong>
We will support and establish culturally safe and viable small business opportunities that grow from Aboriginal knowledges and connections to Country, and that provide income for members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2060Equity<\/strong>
We will seek to ensure Aboriginal members share fairly in the social and economic benefits of development on their Country. We will conduct research on the racism that limits opportunities for Aboriginal people living and working outside our communities and help members to identify and address racism when they encounter it. We will support Aboriginal leadership and decision-making across education, employment and enterprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

General<\/strong>
We will do anything else that is incidental or conducive to achieving the above, or that the corporation considers will benefit Aboriginal members and is consistent with its purpose.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
